Camel Beach, Carmel California
I’m honored to be featured in the fall issue of Carmel Magazine. A huge thanks to Publisher Steve Snyder for his support, Kelly Udall for the beautiful layout, and to Michael Chatfield for writing such a thoughtful article.
As I sit down to write this post, the word circling my mind is you, the few who will read this missive. People do write for themselves, through journaling or keeping a diary, but the primary reason for the written word is to communicate an idea. When the reader fades from the writer’s mind, the message drifts untethered.
The magic of writing is in how the words pour forth without directorial guidance. I’ll take that idea a step further and say all creative endeavors come from an unknown source, a muse we’ve never met. Perhaps this artsy entity is just a hidden aspect of who we are, and that’s what art is, an avenue to the unknown. The order of words is not an accident in the same way dreams are not an accident. Words drop from my fingers in a way I can’t explain. I only know that if I don’t interrupt the flow, interesting things will happen. They may not be good, but they’re always revealing.
So here I am, staring out into space without my eyes and sensing the warm oneness that seems to tie everything together. I can’t stop myself from writing this sentence. It shouldn’t matter what I write or even if I write, but it does. Like reading a good book, I have to know what comes next. And without holding you in mind, the circle is broken. Thank you for your support.
